Chinese
Lunar Mansions
Chinese astronomer-astrologers
were studying the skies thousands of years before the invention of the
popular animal names of the now familiar Chinese zodiac. Four giant seasonal
constellations were each divided into seven segments, producing what the poet
Chaucer in the Franklin's Tale called the '28 mansions of the Moon'. These
plotted the paths of the Moon, Sun and planets through the sky, and any unusual
astronomical events, particularly eclipses, were duly noted in the official
records. The Court Astrologer would then pronounce his opinions on the
significance of these events, from impending catastrophes to times of
celebration.
Today Chinese astrologers predict a person's characteristics and
fortunes through life by the lunar mansion of the birthdate; fengshui
masters calculate auspicious directions from the lunar mansions inscribed
on the Chinese compass (the Luopan); while astronomers and
researchers are able to define precise historical dates from references to the
lunar mansions in ancient texts.
Derek
Walters is the leading world authority on this subject and has been frequently
invited to speak on this and related topics
in China and throughout the world. As the author of several books on
Chinese Astrology and Feng Shui Derek is probably best known for his book ‘The
Complete Guide to Chinese Astrology’.
This
workshop represents a unique opportunity to find out about one of the oldest
systems of astronomy and astrology in the world from the leading international
authority.
